Knocking Boots and Knitting Booties: Rushin’ Hands and Roamin’ Fingers!

Knocking Boots and Knitting Booties is a no-holds-barred series about sex during pregnancy from MsBehaved contributor Brighid. Last time, Brighid got pregnant again after a false start, and decided to put fisting and anal play on hold for the first trimester due to some unpleasant physical side effects. Now Brighid faces the libidinous demands of the second trimester! Read on…

Ah… the second trimester. My nausea has receded, I don’t feel the unrelenting need to nap every afternoon, and my abdomen is looking a little more like I’m growing a baby and a little less like I stopped running and significantly increased my beer intake.

One of the many things I looked forward to in pregnancy* was the second trimester sex drive boost. Read any pregnancy book or go on any pregnancy board and you’ll find pages dedicated to a second-trimester libido jump that rivals any horny 12-year-old. Women who previously were only interested in sex once or twice a week, are desperate for it daily. Women who have never had an orgasm in their lives (poor souls) can now have multiple orgasms! Others complain that their poor partners simply can’t keep up with their new super-charged sex drives. Now, I consider my sex drive to be healthy and normal, but it’s certainly dipped in the past several years. Between the stress of grad school, the stress of life, and just the general post-puberty hormonal shift, I’ve definitely scaled back a bit from what I think of as my glory days. So the idea of pregnancy as a sex drive fountain of youth? Yes, please.

Since entering the second trimester I’ve noticed a pretty marked change in my libido. The funny thing is that it’s not just an issue of higher versus lower libido. The kind of sex I’m interested in has really changed. For the most part, sex with MVP is still high on my list. What I didn’t anticipate is that I would feel an almost compulsive need to masturbate… um… daily. Sometimes twice a day. Sometimes three times a day. Vibrators, dildos, and especially manual stimulation are either on my mind or in my pants.

Change #2: I’ve experienced a dramatic switch from desiring visual stimulation to a craving literary smut. In other words, I now prefer written erotica to porn videos. I’ve always been a very visually-oriented person, but now I’d estimate that 75% of my browser history lists LitErotica (note to self: clear browser history). The content I’m interested in is very much the same, but now I want to read about it rather than see it. Some women also report experiencing an increase in sexual dreams. Many discuss having  erotic dreams about bisexual or group sex for the first time. Apparently my sleeping mind was already in the gutter because my sexy dreams are just as raunchy and frequent as they always were.

Change #3: This one is tough. This one makes me sad. Pre-pregnancy, my sexual superpower was that my body loves to orgasm. The first one is generally easy, and after the first they just keep coming (ha ha). Now that I’m pregnant I find it takes a lot more effort to orgasm in general, and my multiple orgasms are really few and far between. I’m sure it has to do with hormones, so hopefully I’ll be back to my old self again post-partum.

Change #4: Positions! At 21 weeks I’m finally unable to lie on my belly. And if I lie on my back too long my left arm goes numb, due to the weight of the uterus constricting blood flow to limbs). So far we haven’t had to make many changes, but I foresee less time on my back and more time either on top, or on my hands and knees.

Next time on Knockin’ Boots and Knittin’ Booties: Second trimester lingerie! What a preggo lingerie-junkie does when her pre-preggo bras really no longer fit and the pre-preggo lingerie is good for a joke but not much more.

*Other things included thicker hair, better skin, bigger boobs, and the belly.
